Instead of Telnet, you can use Secure Shell, which creates a more secure session than the Telnet application that uses an unencrypted data stream. Secure Shell (SSH) uses encrypted keys to send data so that your username and password are not sent in the clear.

    Steps of SSH setup:
    1. Set your hostname:
    Router(config)#hostname Name
    2. Set the domain name (both the hostname and domain name are required for the encryption keys to be generated):
    Name(config)#ip domain-name site.com
    3. Generate the encryption keys for securing the session:[The name for the keys will be: Name.site.com]
    Name(config)#crypto key generate rsa general-keys modulus 1024
    4. Set the max idle time for SSH:[60 seconds]
    Name(config)#ip ssh time-out 60
    5. Set the max failed attempts for an SSH connection:[3 retries]
    Name(config)#ip ssh authentication-retries 3
    6. Connect to the vty lines of router
    Name(config)#line vty 0 1180
    7. Configure SSH and then telnet as access protocols:[if you did not put telnet in the end , then SSH will work only]
    Name(config)#transport input ssh telnet
