how to block certain websites on windows without using a firewall

    hi,
is there a way to block Windows from accessing a website (even Microsoft.com) without using any firewall?

Windows saves a local copy of DNS for quick access, if the site if found there, it goes to the associated IP and the browser does not check any DNS server
so all you have to do is modify this file, usually found in Windows folder, \System32\drivers\etc and called hosts (no extension)
add a new line for the site you want to block like this
    127.0.0.1 somesite.com
127.0.0.1 is the IP for your localhost, your own machine so if you have IIS or Apache installed the browser will show you your root site at local host !
make sure you edit the file using notepad or any editor as an administrator or you won't be able to save
you will need to restart after saving for your changes to take effect, or just flush DNS
also as an administrator run CMD and type: ipconfig /flushdns
    and you are done
